Paxil Birth Defects

Women who took Paxil during their first trimester on, or before December 2006, and whose babies sustained birth defects including Septal Defects (ASD/VSD), Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), PPHN, as well as many other injuries, malformations, and congenital birth defects, may be eligible to receive substantial financial compensation from GlaxoSmithKline, the drug's manufacturer, for having children that suffered from Paxil birth defects.

Mother's whose babies were born with heart murmurs after Paxil use during the first trimester should also contact an attorney to discuss their legal options.

In 2005, the Food & Drug Administration warned that the antidepressant Paxil was linked to an increased risk of birth defects in expectant mothers that were taking the drug.

Since Paxil was approved in 1992, it has become one of the world's most popular antidepressants, taken by tens of millions of patients. According to GSK, about 25 percent of Paxil users are women of childbearing age, between 18 and 45.

In an FDA study of more than 3500 pregnant women, Paxil was linked to twice as many birth defects as other antidepressants. Most of the Paxil birth defects seen in the study were heart related.

Paxil Lawsuit Settlements

Recent studies have found that women who took Paxil during their pregnancy were more likely to give birth to babies who suffered from Paxil birth defects than women who took other SSRIs or women who did not take any antidepressants during their pregnancy.

These Paxil side effects can be life-threatening and include serious health problems such as congenital heart defects. Now, some women are investigating filing their own Paxil lawsuit, alleging that GlaxoSmithKline did not properly warn of the increased risk of certain birth defects associated with taking Paxil during pregnancy.

GlaxoSmithKline has paid more than billions of dollars to settle thousands of claims that Paxil may increase the risk for certain birth defects if taken during pregnancy. Families whose children were born with birth defects, following their mother's use of Paxil during pregnancy, have received more than $1.5 million settlements each by filing their own Paxil lawsuit.

In October 2009, GSK was ordered to pay $2.5 million to the family of a three-year-old boy who was born with heart defects. The ruling that Glaxo officials "negligently failed to warn" about the Paxil birth defect risks opened the door to hundreds of similar Paxil lawsuit cases being filed that are continually being settled in the multi-district litigation.

Paxil lawsuit settlements have averaged in excess of $1.5 Million for many families that have brought a claim against the drug's manufacturer alleging Paxil use was the cause of their baby's birth defects.*
